The Boxster Engine.

The Porsche Boxster engine is essentially the same engine as used in the Porsche 996 and Cayman.

Over the years there has been several variations on this engine design with several updates to some of the parts, its performance and capacity.

Models Size Years BHP Torque
Boxster 2.5 L 1997 - 1999 201 BHP
Boxster 2.7 L 2000 - 2002 217 BHP
Boxster 2.7 L 2003 - 2004 228 BHP
Boxster/Cayman 2.7 L 2005 - 2007 237 BHP
Boxster/Cayman 2.7 L 2007 - to date 241 BHP
Boxster S 3.2 L 2000 - 2002 249 BHP
Boxster S 3.2 L 2003 - 2004 255 BHP
Boxster S 3.2 L 2004 - 2005 260 BHP
Boxster S 3.2 L 2005 - 2007 276 BHP
996 3.4 L 1998 - 2001 300 BHP
Cayman S 3.4 L 2006 - 2007 291 BHP
Boxster S/Cayman S 3.4 L 2007 - 2008 291 BHP
996 3.6 L 2002 - 2004 320 BHP
997 3.6 L 2004 - 2009 325 BHP
997 Carrera S 3.8 L 2004 - 2009 355 BHP
997 Carrera S X51 3.8 L 2004 - 2009 381 BHP

As you can see from this table, the power output and capacity of this family of engines has increased over time. Changes included various levels of variable cam timing equipment, revised intake designs and mapping.

And yes its possible to transplant a larger or more powerful engine from another Boxster or even a 996 into a Boxster!! My local independent specialist is actually in the process of designing a 3.9 turbocharged engine for the Boxster and Cayman!

On the internet you will hear many rumours and stories of Boxster engine failures and design faults however they are not as common as you might be lead to believe and should not put you off a potential purchase of a Boxster.

However to give a balanced view, bellow is a link to how Boxster engines have been known to fail and some common faults and causes with the Boxster engine.
